MACV Veteran Story: Chris
“I’m so grateful to MACV for saving my life.” -Housed Navy Veteran Chris
Chris found himself facing financial hardship, unable to afford his rent or continue working due to injuries and a medical condition. His situation began to feel insurmountable after a work injury, major hip surgery, an emphysema diagnosis, rising rent costs, and the added stress of the pandemic.
Fortunately, Chris’s mother introduced him to MACV.
“Within a few months, with support from MACV, I was able to 180 my life.” -Housed Navy Veteran Chris.
MACV assisted Chris in finding an affordable apartment in a neighborhood he liked. MACV also connected him with Meals on Wheels to ensure he received regular, balanced meals. “The food is really good and helps me maintain a healthier diet,” says Chris.
Having a secure home has been “a big relief” for Chris. It allows him to focus on his health without worrying about where he’ll sleep, especially after long days full of medical appointments. Chris has been living in his current apartment for a year now.
Before his health complications, Chris worked as a machinist, utilizing his computer numerical control technician degree. When he’s feeling well, he enjoys building model airplanes, a hobby that has resulted in an impressive collection. He hopes to continually stabilize himself by connecting to benefits and dreams of eventually returning to school.
Through the Minnesota Veterans Entering Stable Tenancy (MNVEST) Subsidy program, MACV provided housing for Chris. This program, supported by the State of Minnesota, offers rental subsidies and case management services to Veteran households experiencing homelessness, just like Chris. In 2023, the program served 79 Veterans and is an essential part of our services for Veterans looking to rebuild their lives in Minnesota.
