This week, we are featuring Nancy Erickson!

At MACV, staff across the state work every day to connect Veterans and their families with stable housing and the support needed to build long-term stability. Nancy is part of that work as a Client Intake and Information Specialist, serving as one of the first points of contact for Veterans experiencing housing crises in the metro region.

In her role, Nancy provides compassionate support by listening without judgment, assessing each Veteran’s unique needs, and connecting them with the resources and services that help them move toward stability. Her goal is to ensure every Veteran feels heard, respected, and supported during some of the most difficult moments in their lives.

Nancy’s connection to the military is deeply personal. Her father, Robert Oberschmid, dedicated his life to serving our country, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force. During World War II, he served as a lead pilot commander, successfully completing 30 bombing missions with the 93rd Bomb Group and bringing every member of his crew home safely. He later served during the Korean War and held positions with the United States Embassy in Germany and the Pentagon. In 2013, Nancy had the opportunity to accompany her father on an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., an experience she treasures. Her nephew, Brian Oberschmid, also served for 12 years in the United States Marine Corps, including deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Their service inspired Nancy’s deep respect for Veterans and her commitment to supporting those who have served.

Before joining MACV, Nancy graduated from the College of St. Thomas and spent many years in education, serving in both classroom teaching and administrative roles while raising her family. During that time, she also planned and led fundraising galas for numerous charitable organizations. As she looked for the next chapter in her career, she wanted to work for an organization making a meaningful difference in the community, which ultimately led her to MACV.

Nancy hopes more people recognize that Veteran homelessness is often the result of complex challenges rather than a single event. She believes reducing stigma, showing compassion, and supporting organizations that serve Veterans are all ways the community can help Veterans rebuild their lives.

Outside of work, Nancy enjoys spending time with her husband, Donnie, their three children, and their grandson, Gavin, who brings endless joy to the family. She also loves reading, walking her dogs Rocky and Zuzu, volunteering, traveling, spending weekends at friends’ cabins, and enjoying the outdoors.
