MACV Intern Spotlight – Ryan Folstad

This week, we are featuring Ryan Folstad, MACV Intern!
As an intern at MACV, Ryan is gaining experience across several departments to build a well-rounded understanding of the organization and our work to end Veteran homelessness. His interest in the field began when MACV’s Kimberly Wilson visited his human services class as a guest speaker. Her presentation inspired him to explore opportunities to make a difference in the lives of Veterans.
Ryan is currently pursuing a degree in Human Services at Northwood Technical College, where his studies focus on case management, interpersonal communication, psychopharmacology, and child and adolescent behavior. His professional background includes experience in public schools, food services, and direct client advocacy. Through these roles, he has developed skills in active listening, empathetic communication, conflict resolution, and connecting people with community resources.
That experience has shaped how Ryan understands the challenges Veterans face, particularly when it comes to finding and maintaining stable housing.
“Veteran homelessness isn’t just a housing issue. It is a complex challenge that ties deeply to mental health support, physical well-being, smooth transitions from military service, and long-term stability. Housing is the foundation needed to help many Veterans navigating life’s challenges.” — Ryan Folstad
Ryan also has a personal connection to military service through his grandfather, who served in the Air Force during World War II. That family connection adds another layer of meaning to his experience at MACV.
What stands out most to Ryan about MACV is the organization’s holistic, person-centered approach to ending Veteran homelessness. He appreciates that the work extends beyond immediate housing needs to address the many factors that contribute to long-term stability.
For Ryan, the opportunity to learn from different departments provides a valuable perspective on how MACV’s programs work together. He recognizes the importance of building relationships, understanding individual circumstances, and connecting Veterans with resources that help them move forward.
Outside of work and school, Ryan enjoys staying active and spending time outdoors, especially playing disc golf at local courses. He’s also passionate about music, playing guitar and harmonica, and listening to folk and indie artists. He enjoys weightlifting, tackling DIY projects around the house, and spending quality time with his family.
From exploring different areas of MACV to building on his education in human services, Ryan is approaching his internship with curiosity and a commitment to learning. His appreciation for MACV’s comprehensive approach reflects an understanding that ending Veteran homelessness requires more than housing alone.
Ryan, thank you for bringing your enthusiasm, curiosity, and commitment to learning to MACV. We’re glad to have you as part of the team!
