MACV Veteran Story: Michael

“MACV was my North Star, and I followed it home.” – Housed Air Force Veteran Michael
For 65-year-old Air Force Veteran Michael, MACV represents a new beginning after years of experiencing homelessness and working to rebuild stability in his life. Originally from Chicago, Michael came to Minnesota more than two decades ago and has spent much of that time navigating periods of stability and uncertainty. Personal challenges and unexpected setbacks sometimes interrupted his progress, but through it all, Michael valued his connections with others and the sense of community he found in Minnesota.
More recently, Michael experienced another significant setback when he lost his housing assistance and connections with family. He spent nearly two years experiencing homelessness, moving between temporary places to sleep and navigating each day without the security of a place to call his own. Michael had previously reached out to MACV, but the organization couldn’t help him at the time. When another Veteran encouraged him to reconnect with MACV, he decided to try again. This time, he began working with MACV case manager Kris, who helped him navigate barriers and identify opportunities for a more stable future.
“My case manager really believed in me,” Michael shared. Throughout the process, Kris kept checking in, staying connected even when Michael was hard to reach, and encouraging him when the challenges felt overwhelming. “MACV followed through for me when I was ready to give up on everything,” Michael said. “Kris did not leave me.” That consistency helped Michael continue working toward his goals, even when finding an affordable apartment seemed out of reach.
Through a landlord engagement partnership that provides access to deeply affordable housing, MACV helped Michael secure an apartment that offers the opportunity for long-term stability. After nearly two years without a permanent place to live, Michael remembers crying as he held the keys for the first time. “A whole weight fell off me,” he recalled. When he opened the door, he found a fully furnished apartment with the essentials he needed to begin his next chapter. “When I walked in, my apartment was completely furnished,” he shared. Having a kitchen, a comfortable place to rest, and the ability to establish a daily routine has given Michael a renewed sense of security and independence.
Today, Michael is settling into his new home and enjoying the peace of knowing where he will sleep each night. He no longer has to focus on getting through each day and can instead spend time thinking about what comes next. “I don’t have to sleep with one eye open,” he said. “This is my home.” After years of uncertainty, the chance to focus on his well-being and reconnect with what brings him joy is an important part of moving forward.
“I have a window to look out of again. This is a new beginning,” he shared. For Michael, that new beginning means having the security to make plans, reconnect with his community, and enjoy the everyday moments that once felt out of reach. With a place to call his own and a renewed sense of possibility, he can focus less on getting through each day and more on building the life he wants for himself.
