From Students to City Leaders: Robbinsdale Rallies Around New Veteran Neighbors

This fall, Robbinsdale is preparing to open its doors to new Veteran neighbors at The Robin—and the community is coming together in a big way to make sure they feel at home from day one.
At the heart of this effort is Declan Murphy, a student at Armstrong High School and son of former Robbinsdale Mayor Regan Murphy. Declan took the lead in organizing welcome baskets for residents, filled with basic household items and gift cards from local businesses. His idea was simple but powerful: when someone moves into a new home, the little things matter. Having a few essentials on hand—and a reminder that their community cares—can make the transition easier and brighter.
Declan rallied local businesses, neighbors, and supporters to contribute. Thanks to his leadership, the project has already raised more than $5,000 in donations. Those dollars are being turned into gift cards, cleaning supplies, kitchen basics, move-in kits, and other items that help a new space truly feel like home.
Additionally, current Robbinsdale Mayor Brad Sutton has taken the time to personally write welcome letters for every new Robin resident. These notes are a heartfelt reminder that Robbinsdale is a place where neighbors look out for one another.
The effort has become bigger than just baskets—it’s a reflection of Robbinsdale’s spirit. Families, businesses, and community leaders are pitching in, each in their own way. Some are donating funds, others are providing goods, and many are giving their time to help organize baskets.
As we get closer to welcoming new residents, the excitement is building. This initiative shows what’s possible when a community works together: not just providing affordable housing for Veterans exiting homelessness but creating a true sense of belonging.
