Vets reel ’em in during annual fishing trip

Feature Story

Over 100 veterans showed up for an annual Lake Superior fishing outing on July 26.

Vets on the Lake, an event now in it’s seventh year, brings veterans from across Minnesota and Wisconsin out for a days fishing.

Leaving early from Barkers Island in Superior, Wisconsin, this year’s event brought around 120 veterans and 50 boats out onto the lake.

The event was put on by the Western Lake Superior Troller Association, along with support from the Douglas County Veterans Office, and the Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans (MACV).

Paul Pederson, who works for MACV, says the event is all about camaraderie.

“A lot of people caught fish, I think most people did, and just to come back and be able to tell the story of the day is the best thing, the best therapy – people who went out as strangers came back as friends.”

After a days fishing, the vets returned for a fish fry made with the day’s catch.

Registration for the annual event typically opens in May.
