Why the Point-in-Time Count Matters: Turning Data Into Stable Housing

On January 22nd and 23rd, MACV proudly participated in the annual Point-in-Time (PIT) count, a 24-hour effort that offers a critical snapshot of homelessness in our community and across the nation. This nationwide initiative is made possible through the collaboration of organizations like the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA), and Minnesota’s ten Continuums of Care.
For MACV, the PIT count goes beyond simply gathering numbers—it’s about understanding the lives and challenges of the Veterans we serve. This data helps us tailor housing solutions to meet the unique needs of each individual, ensuring every Veteran’s journey toward stability is met with care and compassion.
“The VA, MDVA, MACV, and the wider community of service providers are coordinating daily for how to serve best Veterans experiencing homelessness. However, the PIT Count offers a unique opportunity to strategize at that moment and reach Veterans who may have been resistant to engaging with services in the past. We know the night of the PIT Count may be our one shot to move unsheltered Veterans towards housing, and we better take it.” -MACV Statewide Program Director Lindsey Hofer
The count focuses on identifying unsheltered individuals as well as those residing in emergency shelters, transitional housing, or safe havens. These insights are a critical step in creating pathways to permanent, stable housing for every Veteran.
During this year’s PIT count, the VA Community Resource & Referral Center (CRRC) transformed into a Veteran Command Center, operating overnight to support the effort. Several MACV staff members were stationed there, working through the evening and into the following day to connect with Veterans, collect data, and provide immediate resources.
By participating in the PIT count, MACV continues its mission to end Veteran homelessness, one connection at a time. Together with our partners and community, we remain committed to ensuring every Veteran has access to a safe and stable home.
