“MACV has helped me twice when I needed them, and I am extremely grateful.” -Housed Army Vietnam Veteran Renee

In June, MACV hosted the 2nd annual Summer Salute, a vibrant gathering that brought together over 225 Veterans. The event was a testament to the strong sense of community that MACV fosters. Countless connections to services were made, including this impactful one by Army Vietnam Veteran Renee.

Renee felt like he was finally starting to stabilize in 2006 when he moved into an apartment after 20 years of homelessness. However, in 2019, he faced the threat of eviction due to a change in property ownership. Thanks to MACV, Renee transitioned smoothly to a new apartment, avoiding the streets again. Bridging also furnished his new apartment, making it a home.

“I probably wouldn’t have this apartment if it weren’t for MACV” – Housed Army Vietnam Veteran Renee

Since he’s been housed, he’s been able to reconnect with his family and his grandchildren. He receives medical care at the VA and enjoys participating in the yearly creative art department competition. Renee is a singer, and he’s proud to have won the contest! He also volunteers to sing at nursing homes.

Events like MACV’s Summer Salute are not just gatherings but transformative experiences. Renee’s attendance at the Summer Salute turned out to be a turning point. Struggling with an old bed that aggravated his health issues, he attended the event after hearing about it through the VA. He encountered Nathaniel Saltz, MACV’s Chief Program Officer, who listened attentively to Renee’s situation and immediately connected him with a MACV case manager. The swift follow-up ensured that Renee had a new bed and dresser within a week, a testament to the transformative power of MACV’s events.

“Without MACV and Summer Salute, I’d still be sleeping on the same old springy mattress, so I’m thankful I went,” Renee reflected with heartfelt appreciation.

The Summer Salute event also provided Renee with new glasses, a phone, and information on employment opportunities, showcasing the comprehensive support MACV offers. Renee’s story powerfully reminds us of the essential role MACV plays in transforming veterans’ lives. Events like the Summer Salute are not just about camaraderie; they are crucial for providing veterans with the resources and support needed to rebuild their lives. Renee’s journey from homelessness to a stable life underscores the profound impact of MACV’s mission.
