MACV Partner Highlight: Avivo Village
The collaboration between Avivo Village and MACV is pivotal in ending Veteran homelessness in Minneapolis and Hennepin County. By offering a range of services and resources, this partnership creates pathways to stable housing and self-sufficiency for Veterans.
Located in the heart of Minneapolis, Avivo Village combines secure, private dwellings with comprehensive services to help individuals transition to permanent housing. The cornerstone of Avivo Village’s success is its Housing First model, which prioritizes providing stable housing without preconditions. This model allows residents to focus on personal growth and recovery by removing barriers, ensuring that individuals can access the support services they need.
Veterans constitute 14% of Avivo Village’s population at any given time, often facing unique challenges. Through its partnership with MACV, Avivo Village provides tailored outreach and support to ensure Veterans receive the specialized resources they need to access stable housing and rebuild their lives.
Navy Veteran Antonio exemplifies the impact of this collaboration. At 52, Antonio had been experiencing homelessness intermittently and staying in his vehicle. He highlights the significance of Avivo Village by stating, “As soon as I heard I could get off the streets and keep my dogs, I knew I was willing to stay at Avivo Village.” For Antonio, meeting other Veterans at this location “feels a little bit like a community.” He is now working closely with the MACV outreach team to find a permanent place to call home.
Avivo Village stands as a promising model for future homelessness solutions. One of the critical challenges faced by individuals experiencing homelessness is substance use. Avivo Village has successfully reversed 197 overdoses, showcasing its unwavering commitment to harm reduction and saving lives. This achievement underscores the importance of having trained staff and readily available services.
Furthermore, Avivo Village’s approach is culturally responsive and trauma-informed. With 57% of its residents identifying as Native American, the village incorporates culturally appropriate practices and services, ensuring that all residents feel understood and respected. Focusing on individualized care, community involvement, and innovative approaches sets a precedent for addressing homelessness effectively and compassionately.
The collaboration between Avivo Village and MACV signifies a critical step toward ending Veteran homelessness in Hennepin County. By embracing innovative models like Housing First, providing tailored support for Veterans, and committing to harm reduction and cultural responsiveness, we are paving the way for more effective and compassionate homelessness solutions.
