Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans Presents: Honoring Minnesota’s Veterans…Dedicated to Our Freedoms Featuring the American Veterans Traveling Tribute Wall Canterbury Park ~ June 18-22, 2008 From June 18-22, MACV is hosting the American Veterans Traveling Tribute (“The Wall”) at Canterbury Park to recognize Minnesota’s veterans. Special events and activities are planned throughout the five days including a Welcome Reception, Motorcycle & Gear Show, Freedom BBQ, and a Comedy Show (slated for September 18, 2008). Each day, we’ll feature activities including military flyovers, radio broadcasts, marching bands, bagpipes, EMTs, sheriff and police departments, antique military vehicles, guest speakers, tributes and more. “Honoring Minnesota’s Veteran’s…Dedicated to Our Freedoms” is the largest fundraising event initiative in MACV’s history. By attending special events, donating to our silent auction and considering sponsorship opportunities, you will help us to provide increased outreach to more Minnesota veterans and their families than we are able to serve today. “To serve those who first served us” On a single night in October 2006, Wilder Research found 624 military veterans in Minnesota experiencing homelessness, 17 of who served in Iraq and/or Afghanistan; MACV is there to assist. “MACV turned my life around – gave me a place to lay my head, get medical help, and find a job. I owe my life to them.” Bob, Gulf War veteran Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans (MACV) is an IRS 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that has been directly helping veterans and their families affected by homelessness in Minnesota for over 14 years. In that time more than 3,000 have been assisted with transitional housing and other services. It is estimated that this year there are 4300 veterans in Minnesota who are homeless; MACV is there to assist. Several homeless and veterans organizations recognize MACV’s transitional and permanent housing programs as a model for the nation. We have a passion for serving those in Minnesota who first served us. “I can’t begin to tell you how this program has helped me put my life back together. I came into MACV a broken man with little hope for myself. . . I truly owe my life to them. . .” Homelessness and its consequences not only cause human suffering, but also significantly contribute to community problems that result in major health and social costs. James returned from duty in Afghanistan to discover his marriage was over, his wife and children gone. Struggling to pay his bills and maintain a home mortgage, James found the short term support he needed at MACV. Without MACV, James would have been on the street in a matter of days.
