Reflections on Veterans on the Lake 2025 – by Paul Pedersen

On July 26, the much-anticipated Veterans on the Lake annual fishing event kicked off at 5:30 a.m. at Barker’s Island. More than 117 Veterans signed up to fish on Lake Superior, joined by over 50 boats ready to take them out on the water. One Veteran shared, “It’s always been my dream to fish on Lake Superior.” On that day, his dream came true.
For the past seven years, this event had been a joint effort of the Western Lake Superior Trolling Association, the Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans (MACV), and the Douglas County Veterans Service Office. Support poured in once again from local DAV chapters, including Duluth Chapter 6, Carlton County Chapter 18, Elk River Chapter 39, and Chapter 23 from Virginia.
The weather held, plenty of fish were caught, and even more stories were shared. Afterward, Veterans gathered under the tent to enjoy fresh fish and salads prepared by volunteers. The room buzzed with conversation—Who caught the biggest fish? When is next year’s event?
Thanks to our partners, volunteers, and community, Veterans had another unforgettable day on the lake.
