Project Launch Ceremony: MACV Announces Major Renovation Project with Support from CenterPoint Energy Foundation
The Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans (MACV), because of the support of the CenterPoint Energy Foundation, is proud to announce a generous grant of $500,000 that will renovate a 28-unit supportive housing property in Minneapolis. This project marks a pivotal moment in MACV’s historic housing expansion efforts, targeting Veterans with limited housing options.
Originally scheduled to be completed over the course of two or more years, support from the CenterPoint Energy Foundation accelerated this renovation to be completed in 2024. Through this grant, 11 units will be fully renovated and developed to be fully accessible for residents. The support from the CenterPoint Energy Foundation will also help increase energy efficiency and
lower carbon footprint of the building through the installation of new windows for the entire
building.
“The need for housing for Veterans experiencing homelessness has continued to grow, specifically among seniors 55 and older. We are so excited about LaSalle due to the accessibility components there, allowing our Veterans to age in place in housing that meets their mobility needs,” said Sara Riegle, MACV’s Vice President of Property Operations. Her statement underscores the importance of this project not just as a housing solution but as a commitment to the dignity and well-being of Veterans who have served our country.
In July 2023, MACV acquired the former skilled nursing/rehabilitation property located on LaSalle Avenue, with the vision of transforming it into a supportive housing program. Thanks to the substantial support from the CenterPoint Energy Foundation, the renovation will focus on establishing safe and dignified housing for Veteran tenants in 28 units. “
The CenterPoint Energy Foundation is proud to support MACV in providing affordable, accessible units to support the needs of Veterans in our community and their mission to ending homelessness experienced by Veterans in our state,” stated Brad Steber, Vice President of Minnesota Gas at CenterPoint Energy. “Through safe, energy efficient and accessible housing for our Veterans in Minnesota, we can show our gratitude to those who have given so much to our country.”
This initiative represents the largest residence within MACV’s portfolio of properties designed especially for Veterans facing the greatest challenges in securing housing. A particular emphasis has been placed on accommodating the needs of senior Veterans, aged 55 and older, by offering residences that allow them to age in place comfortably and safely. The LaSalle property has been
specifically chosen for its accessibility features, addressing the growing need for housing solutions for Veterans experiencing homelessness, especially those with mobility needs.
Over the past two years, MACV has been dedicated to acquiring, renovating, and leasing multiunit supportive housing with intensive services. The experience and insights gained from these efforts have been instrumental in the planning and execution of the LaSalle property’s renovations, ensuring that the project will meet the complex needs of its Veteran residents.
