Disabled Veteran’s home gets a face-lift

In the spring of 2011 a disabled veteran and his wife received a letter from their mobile home park stating that the outside of their home was not up to the park’s standard and demanded they make the necessary repairs. This letter implied that if they did not comply an eviction notice would be eminent. The family did not have the financial resources to make these repairs and was running out of options.

This family came to the attention of MACV in Duluth in September, when the veteran was hospitalized and his wife was worried about being evicted.  MACV staff members were able to assist with expediting a pending service connected disability claim and the veteran was able to start receiving benefits for a 100% service connected disability, increasing the household’s income significantly. MACV also contacted a community partner, Home Depot, who generously donated time, materials, and labor to complete the badly needed exterior renovations.

The best surprise for this veteran was that a handicapped accessible ramp was added to his home and a motorized scooter was donated by Disabled American Veterans group.  Now this veteran no longer needs to be carried in and out of his home and will be able to enjoy a higher quality of life.  Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time and talents to make this happen!

MACV Opens New SIL House in Duluth

In April, MACV opened its first SIL house in Duluth.  Due to the discontinuation of a program in a youth based nonprofit, MACV was able to acquire the home to use for veteran housing.  It will provide four units of Transitional Housing, one unit of Permanent Housing, as well as supportive services for homeless veterans.  In Transitional Housing, participants set goals for themselves and meet with a case manager on a regular basis while they work on their independent living skills.  The intent is for these veterans to have full time staff approved days where the end goal is employment.

Brick CampaignMACV–Duluth Office Moves to New Home!

On December 15, 2010 MACV staff and the project building contractors and developer welcomed Governor Pawlenty as he toured Duluth Veterans’ Place. Governor Pawlenty said he was very impressed by this unique housing project
for veterans.

Duluth Veterans’ Place began with the renovation of two old buildings. One of the buildings will offer eleven permanent supportive housing units, on-site supportive services and a training center. The second building will provide five transitional housing units for homeless veterans which are co-located with our Duluth offices allowing MACV to bring other services on-site on a regular basis.

As the housing project neared completion employees from the Duluth Home Depot came together to help build the gazebo and outdoor gathering space.
